The current Boilermakers Special, or Boilermaker Special V, is one in a long line of trains. It was created by Wabash National, a Lafayette semitrailer manufacturer. They built the Boilermaker V to resemble the original Victorian era Boilermaker I and was dedicated on September 25, 1993. It replaced the Boilermaker special VI, which was nicknamed the Boilermaker Xtra-special because it was a much smaller version of the original. The original Boiler was created and presented in September of 1940, and has made appearances at various events around campus ever since.
